The society for fern enthusiasts
The BPS Spore Exchange is a free service for BPS members. You can join here.
If you need any advice or help, there are links below, or we can be contacted on spores@britishfernsociety.org.uk
Order form (Excel spreadsheet)
The exchange runs from 1st January and all orders must be received by Tuesday 31st March 2026. Each BPS member is allowed 20 packets (donors are entitled to an additional 10 packets). Some spores are in very limited supply and may run out within the first week. To help us give you the best possible selection — especially if you’re ordering later in the season — please include plenty of alternatives on your form.
Ordering Your Spores
Spores may be ordered using the form to the left of the page in Excel or PDF format. Please use whichever version is most convenient for you. The Excel version can be completed, saved, and then sent to us by e-mail at spores@britishfernsociety.org.uk. The PDF version can be printed and then, after completion, either scanned and sent as an image or posted to the address given on the list.
Please note: This Spore Exchange is only available to current BPS members.
Overseas orders
Following changes to legislation, phytosanitary certificates are required for the import of spores into some countries from the UK. Specifically, this applies to those in the European Union. We will continue to monitor the situation but we greatly regret that, at present, we are no longer able to send spores to the E.U. In addition, the system of importing small lots of seed to the US without phytosanitary certificates which we have been using for many years has now been deemed not to include fern spores. This means that we are also no longer able to send spores to the US.
Short viability spores
Short viability or green spores are dealt with separately and are sent out throughout the year within a few days of receipt. If you wish to receive e-mail notification when such spores are available, please contact us and we will add your e-mail to the distribution list.
Thank you
The Spore Exchange is completely reliant on the generosity of those members who donate spores. In recognition of this, donor’s orders are given preference, a great advantage at the start of the distribution when rare varieties can soon run out. Donors may also order an additional 10 varieties.
Finally as the Spore Exchange organisers, we’ve very happy to help – just email us.
